What You Missed . . . June Luncheon Featuring: Margie Warrell
"Who woke up this morning feeling strong, energetic, full of vitality and capacity for life?" Oops. A resounding silence. Ok then. "How many people feel they're facing multiple demands and unrealistic deadlines?" Oh, yeah. A lot of hands go up. Margie Warrell, author of the bestselling "Find Your Courage!" (McGraw-Hill) and guest on NBC's Today Show and other national media, had found her audience.
The Roundtable's June program featured Margie Warrell on "Building Resilience: Bounce Back From Setbacks, Soar Above Adversity, Thrive Under Pressure." To contend with all of the pressures and demands women entrepreneurs face in their multiple roles, Margie advocates that we S.O.A.R. In brief, Margie says we need to stop and step back (S) from feeling overwhelmed by whatever means works for us - a cleansing breathe, meditation, exercise. We need to observe (O) what it is about the event that is causing us to translate it into stress. Then, ask (A) ourselves the question what is the opportunity in this situation? And, finally, reframe (R) the situation by challenging our assumptions, the main one of which usually includes "I shouldn't have this problem", and rewrite the stories we tell about ourselves that are keeping us back.
Margie is a young, attractive and obviously successful woman. Why listen to someone like that on building resilience or overcoming adversity? Obviously it must just be a theoretical exercise for her. Until you learn that Margie overcame bulimia in her early 20s and by her late 20s had faced death while working in Papua New Guinea. One of her brothers suffered an accident that left him paralyzed and another brother committed suicide after suffering for 10 years with schizophrenia. Suddenly, her credibility soared (pun intended).
Quotes from attendees:
